Who are candidates for a corneal transplant?
Patients become eligible for a corneal transplant only if it is not possible to improve their vision through spectacles, soft- or hard contact lenses or if a less-invasive procedure, such as corneal cross-linkingCorneal cross-linking is a non-invasive technique that was developed to strengthen the structure of a cornea by strengthening the bonds among the fibers thereof. See Cornea Centre – Corneal Cross-linking. or an ICRSAn intra-corneal ring segment, commercially available as a Keraring or INTACS. or Toric Phakic LensAn artificial lens that is placed into the eye to correct astigmatism. would not be sufficient to correct the problem.
Corneal transplant surgery is believed to be one of the most successful types of transplant surgery and the techniques are improving constantly. At Optimed Eye and Laser Clinic we are fortunate to have some of the most advanced equipment to perform the latest transplant techniques.
Admission to the Clinic occurs on the day of the scheduled surgery and, although the surgery is done under general anaesthetic, it is routinely performed as an outpatient procedure. It is therefore advisable to arrange for transport to and from the clinic.
