Our Doctor:  Frik Potgieter

Dr FJ Potgieter

He currently serves as a member of the International Council of the International Society of Refractive Surgery of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (ISRS/AAO) for South Africa and was also a board member and vice president of the African Society of Refractive Surgery. He currently holds the position of President of the Southern African Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and also serves as an Executive Committee Member of the Society. Dr Potgieter is an invited member of the esteemed International Intra-ocular Implant Club, which is the oldest society in the world to promote the field of cataract and lens-based eye surgery.

Dr Potgieter is the founder and director of the Optimed Eye and Laser Clinic in Pretoria, South Africa. He is recognised as an expert in the field of laser refractive corrections and refractive surgery and is thus a frequently-invited lecturer at local and international scientific meetings, where he continues to impart his knowledge through the presentation of scientific papers and courses. He has directed numerous training programs for specialists in refractive eye treatments and -surgery.

He is actively involved with research in refractive, lens and corneal transplant surgery and is presently working on a project to restore the focusing mechanism of the eye which, as a natural phenomenon, decays in people over the age of 40. For this project, he works in collaboration with colleagues in South Africa, Germany and the US. He is the author of several articles in popular and peer-review journals and contributed a chapter to a widely-read textbook on corrective Lasik (Laser Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis) treatments.

Recognising the need for accurate statistics and data, he is involved in ongoing development of software solutions for data capture and analysis in the medical field. To further advance this goal, he formed a software development company, NuLane Technologies, of which he is the director.

For his service to the field of ophthalmology, he received the first Kritzinger Memorial Award from the ISRS in 2000 at a function in Miami, Florida. In 2013 he was also honoured to present the Epstein Lecture at the bi-annual meeting of the SASCRS at a meeting held at the Victoria Falls in Zambia. Having been chosen to give this lecture is the highest academic honour to be bestowed upon an anterior segment surgeon in South Africa.

For his sustained service to the community, he received the prestigious "Paul Harris Award" from Rotary in June 2013.

In his spare time he enjoys a game of tennis, photography, competitive shooting and flying helicopters. He is married and has three daughters.

He finds his strength in the Almighty God and strives to apply Psalm 91 in his everyday life: He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty (whose power no foe can withstand). I will say of the Lord, He is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God; on Him I lean and rely and in Him I (confidently) trust! (From the Amplified Bible).

Personal

Frederik Johannes Potgieter was born on August 27th, 1958 in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.  After finishing his senior grades at the Brandwag High School in Uitenhage, he started his medical studies at the Medical School of the University of Stellenbosch, where he completed his MB ChB in 1982.  It was during this time that Jenny Rudman, who was to become his lifelong soul mate and companion, became an integral part of his life.  From this marriage, 3 daughters were born.

In 1985, after working for 3 years in public sector hospitals as a medical officer, he enlisted for what was compulsory military service at the time as a medical doctor and was, among other adventures, involved in the conflict on the then South West Africa (Namibian) northern border with Angola.

His passion for his country prompted him to join the permanent staff of the South African Defence Force (SADF), in which he served for 13 years within the medical field.

At the time, the SADF offered numerous opportunities to advance within the professional, military as well as sporting arenas, of which he took full advantage.  This prompted him to specialize in ophthalmology and, after a number of years in the service, he gained a training position sponsored by the military at the University of Pretoria (UP).

During the course of his military career, he took up competitive shooting and had the honour to represent South Africa as part of the Springbok service rifle shooting team against Germany, Israel, Namibia and Taiwan in 1992.

As mentioned, there were also opportunities in other areas of personal development, so that he eventually took honourable discharge from the military as a lieutenant-colonel and head of the department of ophthalmology at 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria.

By the time he finished his studies at the UP and qualified as an ophthalmologist in 1996, a number of things happened.  During 1994, corneal laser refractive treatments took the ophthalmic sector by storm.  Even though he was still in training at the university, he was instrumental in convincing the military to acquire the third excimer laserAn Excimer laser is a high-tech laser device used to permanently and very accurately reshape the curvature of the cornea to treat a refractive error or corneal pathology. See About Us – Our Technology – Excimer laser. system in South Africa.

As the military provided their members medical benefits free of charge, the word about the corrective laser treatments spread like wild fire and, within 3 months, the clinic was snowed under a waiting list of some 700 patients.  This led to valuable high volume experience during these first years of Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis (LasikLasik is one of several types of laser treatments to permanently correct refractive errors of the eye. See Laser Vision – Introduction to Laser Treatment.).

It was also during this time that he became acquainted with his trusted friend and international Lasik pioneer, Dr Michiel Kritzinger, who was his mentor and laid the foundation of his approach to refractive laser treatments.

In September 1995, the opportunity to do a glaucoma fellowship under the guidance of Prof Steven Vernon at Queen's Medical Center in Nottingham became available, even though his specialisation in ophthalmology was not yet completed.  This provided him with the rare opportunity of completing a fellowship prior to finishing his training as an ophthalmologist, which influenced his future approach concerning research activities.

During the course of 1996, he took the final examinations in ophthalmology at the College of Medicine of South Africa, the UP and the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.

After finishing his formal studies, he was appointed head of the department of ophthalmology at 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria, whilst also permitted by the military to run a part-time private practice.

In 1997 he took honourable discharge from the military and devoted his energy to full-time private practice.  Six years later the practice expanded to such an extent that he founded the Optimed Eye and Laser Clinic in Pretoria as a referral clinic for patient care, physician and optometrist education and as an investigational site to advance the art of refractive treatments and surgery.

Apart from his clinical and research activities, Dr Potgieter is active in the organizational structures within ophthalmology, both locally and internationally.  He currently serves as a member of the International Council of the International Society of Refractive Surgery of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (ISRS/AAO) and also holds a position as part of the executive committee of the Southern African Society of cataract and Refractive Surgery.  He is also an invited member of the esteemed International Intraocular Implant Club (IIIC), the oldest society in the world to promote cataract and refractive surgery.

Dr Potgieter is known as an expert in the field of refractive treatments and surgery.  He is a frequently-invited lecturer at both local and international scientific meetings and has directed numerous training programs for specialists in refractive surgery.  He also was the first recipient of the Kritzinger Memorial Award in 2000 from the ISRS.

He is actively involved in research about refractive, lensThe lens fulfils the same role as the lens in a camera. It handles about one-third of the focusing power of the eye and is critical for good vision.See Info on Eyes – Anatomy. and corneal transplant surgery and is presently working on a project to restore the focusing mechanism of the eye which, as a natural phenomenon, decays in older patients.  For this project, he works in collaboration with local colleagues, as well as colleagues in Germany and the US.  He introduced, among his other achievements, the DSAEK, FLEx and Smile surgical techniques into South Africa.

Dr Potgieter is the author of several articles in popular, as well as peer review journals and contributed a chapter in a widely read textbook on Lasik corrective eye treatments.

He is the founder and director of the Optimed Eye and Laser Clinic in Pretoria, South Africa.  His main clinical interests are anterior segment surgery, which include corneal transplantation, refractive- and cataract surgery.  Recognizing the need for accurate statistics and data, he is involved in the ongoing development of software solutions for data capture and analysis within the medical field.  To further advance this goal, he started a software development company, NuLane Technologies, of which he is also the director.

In his spare time he enjoys a game of tennis, photography, competitive shooting (for which he represented South Africa at an international level) and flying helicopters.  He is happily married and has 3 daughters.

Because he is aware of his limitations as a human being, Dr Potgieter committed his life to the Most High and places his ultimate trust as a reborn Christian in the hands of the Almighty God.

"The Paul Harris Committee has decided to present Dr Frik Potgieter with a Paul Harris Recognition Award for the great work which he is doing and specifically in giving Titus Nchabeleng back his eyesight.

What greater gift can anyone receive!

We believe that you, Dr Potgieter, are a worthy recipient if this prestigious award.

The Paul Harris Award criteria are:

    • The candidate's record of service rather than their status in the community.
    • Service should be of a sustained nature.
    • Service to the community beyond the call of duty.

Titus had waited two years for help and Dr Potgieter undertook to fix his eyes. After being nearly blind, he now sees better than me!".
